The Meaning of Life Told through Art is a quest to find the meaning of life and create art that adds meaning to life. It’s an experiment, more than anything else, in philosophy, art, and expression.
Why Meaning thru Art?
The purpose of this project is to attempt to answer the question What is the meaning of life? and (hopefully) create something that adds meaning to life while doing so. Beginning April 4, 2014, I will create art every day for one year. It could be a painting, poem, photo, or something else. At the same time, I am soliciting your answer to The Meaning of Life through this blog, and I will post your words along with my art, and together, perhaps, we can find meaning, answers, and beauty.
I don’t just wish to find the answer to life’s biggest question; I also want to help create meaning in life in the only way I know how, which is by making art. (Note: I do not consider myself an artist, I am a writer, but I enjoy exploring different forms of artistic expression.) I believe that we don’t need art to live, in the most basic sense, but that art makes life worth living. Thus, this blog, The Meaning of Life through Art, is my endeavor to discover the Meaning of Life and at the very least to add some meaning to life through art.
It’s also about soul searching and evolving. As Kurt Vonnegut said, “To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow. So do it.”
Why 365 days?
A year seems like a reasonable amount of time to figure out the meaning of life. Or at least, a reasonable amount of time to spend trying. I also like setting goals for myself, and committing to creating and posting art along with your words every day for a year seems like a good way to dedicate a portion of every day to artistic expression. I like the idea of pushing the limits of my creativity every day.
Why a blog?
I feel that a blog is a way to reach people all over the world. Who knows who might have the answer? I would also like to add that this is a multilingual platform; while I will be writing in English, I encourage you to submit and respond in any language.
Why try to discover the Meaning of Life?
It’s a question that people have posed and scholars and philosophers have attempted to answer for as long as we know. Many say it’s unanswerable, but there are those who believe they have found the meaning of life, and still others who contend that life simply has no meaning and we should just enjoy ourselves while we can. But what do you believe? That’s what I want to know. Is the meaning of life different for everyone, or can we all find one universal answer?
I certainly don’t have the answer.
Perhaps even more than the answer to the meaning of life, I also am looking for the meaning of death. Why so we die at a particular moment? Why is that the time? So often, we hear people say the words, “He died too early” or “She died so young” or “They had so much life left to live.” When life ends, why that particular moment? What significance does it have? After losing someone very close to me, these questions have felt even more pertinent, so I’m asking them. We’re so interconnected across the globe; surely someone has the answer? And maybe this is the way to find it.
